
While I generally use specialized planets (that don't change what they do when I switch), I do maintain some hybrid planets to aid the swingy investments.


Of course, the thing that complicates matters is the factor that you do not have control over: the map. If you are going to win a military victory then you want to gear your race for war and then go for those techs. You should gear these towards the victory condition you want to try to achieve. You have control over your race bonuses and the choices you make (and thus the ideology path you go down) on random events. Your strategy is going to be determined by two things - one you have control over and one you do not. The tree and the game aren't really meant for you to do that.
